Features to know about

Tired Of The Hitch Taking Over Your Bed

If you've hauled with a fifth-wheel base before, you know the tradeoff. The rails eat up most of your bed, the slides have to stay lubricated, and anything you load up ends up with grease on it. After a while, you stop using your truck like a truck. The Nomad fixes that. It replaces the bulky setup with a gooseneck coupler that latches quick and gives you your bed back for what it was meant for: hauling stuff. And, you can do that without cramming your load past metal and grease.

A Smarter Way To Hitch Up

You don't have to climb into your truck bed to hook up or hold the coupler open to unhook. The Nomads auto-latch locks onto the ball as soon as it connects. When you're done, just flip the handle and drive off.

A Simple Upgrade That Works Hard

The Nomad bolts directly to standard Lippert patterns (1621, 1716, or 1116) using your trailer's existing hardware. It's rated for 30,000 lbs GTW and 6,500 lbs pin weight, built as a static system that skips the shock-absorbing guts to keep things lighter and more affordable. It's the practical choice for haulers who want strength, space, and simplicity without the extra cost or complication.

After dealing with bulky hitches and lost bed space, you start looking for something simpler. GEN-Y's Nomad replaces your fifth-wheel pin box with a gooseneck setup that frees your truck bed and adds an auto-latching coupler for easier hookups.

by:

I’ll be honest, this is a pretty basic setup, but that’s not a bad thing. I like that this is a quality basic pin box option without spending a ton of money. It also frees up space in the truck bed since it doesn't require a traditional fifth wheel hitch. Having that extra room is always a win in my book, especially when I'm packing for a trip.

I was impressed that one pin box works for the 1621, 116, and 1716, which makes replacing or choosing the right one a lot simpler. It’s lightweight, which means no freight shipping or extra hassle.

That said, I wouldn’t recommend this if the main goal is improving ride quality. This one is really about keeping things simple and affordable. If that’s what you’re after, it does the job nicely.

I received the Gen Y Nomad within three days of ordering. It arrived packaged very well. Installation took me less than an hour counting removing my old pin box. I installed the Gen Y by myself without a forklift or anything. I just set it up in the bed of my pickup and alighned it with the trailer. It is a very well made hitch. I gave it 4 stars at this time only because I have not towed it it yet.

I will take the 4 stars for now Mark, after that first tow I hope you come back to make it 5 =) Where are you going for the first trip with the new set-up?

@KateF, I just completed a 680 mile round trip from SW Washington to SE Oregon. The Gen Y hitch worked flawlessly. My 2020 Weekend Warrior fifth wheel weighs 16.5K dry. It always tows nicely but this was the first time without any chucking. So yes, at this point after the first trip, 5 stars for sure. The Gen Y hitch is definitely a quality hitch worth every dollar.

by:

Great product very well constructed and much heavier duty than the 5th wheel pin box it replaced.
Highly recommended to anyone looking at a conversion.

It is so great to not have to deal with that bulky 5th wheel hitch Mark! Where did you go for the first trip to test things out?

by:

It was super easy to find the exact hitch I needed and they also let you know what else you need to make them work. Super fast shipping. Easy install all around amazing experience

by:

Love the hitch! It bolted right up with no issues. Very well built. A solidly made item.I pulled my 37 foot 5th wheel over a hundred miles on it's first use. The truck rode very smoothly. Chucking was minimal. I expected a harsh ride like people suggested but didn't experience much of that. I felt very safe using this hitch and I'm glad to have purchased it.

by:

I like how the Gen-Y Nomad clears out the whole truck bed. Getting rid of that big fifth-wheel hitch makes the truck a lot more useful when I’m not towing. I also like how simple the hookup is, you drop the trailer onto the ball and the latch grabs on its own, no climbing around in the bed.

The only thing I would change about this pin box is to add some cushioning. The ride is about the same as a standard setup, but the price reflects that since you’re not paying for the shock absorption feature. I like how straightforward the design is, without a bunch of extra parts getting in the way. This setup is straightforward, solid, and practical.

by:

Showed up with box destroyed and top passenger side bent in pretty badly. Was able to straighten up and mount with no problems. Not e trailer or gen-y fault.

by:

A nice heavy unit, just disappointed in not including safety chain with the hitch.

by:

Very nice product. would be nice to be able to put a lock on release lever just for peace of mind.

by:

Easy install great hitch

by:

Shipped got it quick bolted up no probl em

by:

fit and finish are excellent the product works like it should

by:

Awsome product heavy built bolts right up

by:

Fast and great service

by:

Hello the hitch looks great and the shipping was fast the reason I gave it 4 stars not 5 is to install this adapter on a lippert 1116 pin box you need shim plates which is not stated in the product description I found this out from a friend after I ordered and had to place another order to get them

Sorry about the confusion there Harry. I'll have the product description updated so it indicates that the # GY76FR shims are needed for the 1116 and 1716 pin box.

  • Does The Gen-Y Nomad 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Adapter Pin Box Improve Ride Quality?
Dan, this is a good thing to clarify before you make the switch. The Nomad is a static, non-cushioned pin box, so it won’t soften the ride the way a shock-absorbing or torsion-style upgrade would. You’re choosing the Nomad for simplicity, bed space, and the auto-latching gooseneck connection - not for added comfort. The ride quality will feel very similar to your factory pin box since the Nomad doesn’t have any internal shock-absorbing components. What it does give you is an easier hookup...

  • Is The Gen-Y Hitch Nomad Pin Box GY57ND The Same Dimensions As Lippert 1621 Pin Box?
Hello Levan, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the Gen-Y Hitch Nomad 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY57ND is made to replace the Lippert 1621 pin box so the bolt hole spacing and dimensions are the same. Your cab and tailgate clearance will be essentially the same. The overall dimensions can vary by like 1" depending on which model Lippert 1621 you have and which weight rating Nomad you replace it with, but still the Nomad is designed as a length match for the 1621.

  • How Hard Is It To Install Gen-Y Nomad Adapter In Place Of Lippert 5th Wheel Pin Box? What Hardware?
Cheryl, you’re asking exactly the right questions before diving into this. The good news is the Nomad installs using the same bolt count you remove from your original pin box - Gen-Y even specifies that in their instructions. A minimum of five Grade-8 bolts per side is required, and they call for 5/8 inch x 2 inch Grade-8 bolts torqued to 160 ft-lbs. Most folks re-use their existing hardware if it’s in good shape, but if your original bolts are worn or corroded, this is the perfect time...

  • What is the Most Affordable Gooseneck Pin Box?
There sure is Steve. For an affordable way to add a gooseneck pin box to your 5th wheel trailer, I recommend the Gen-Y Hitch Nomad 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY37ND. This pin box also fits a Rhino bolt pattern and has a similar auto-latching coupler. You will also need the Safety Chain with 2 Hooks for Gen-Y 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box item # GY49GR. Safety chains are required for gooseneck connections and they are not included with the pin boxes. These will attach to that...

  • Will Switching From 5th Wheel Pin Box To Gen Y Nomad Gooseneck Adapter Affect Turn Clearance?
Greg, with your 1716 pin box, the Gen-Y Nomad # GY57ND is the correct model, and it maintains essentially the same front-cap-to-ball distance as your factory box - meaning no added turning clearance, but also no reduction. Gen-Y lists it as offering no additional clearance, so your turning radius should stay just about identical to what you have now. The Nomad is designed to place the gooseneck coupler at the proper height to replicate a standard pin box connection, so it won’t change...

  • Are Spacers Needed with Installing Gen-Y Nomad Gooseneck Adapter in Place of Lippert 1716
Hey Shayne, yes the Gen-Y Hitch Nomad 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY57ND that you referenced would need the included spacers to install in place of a Lippert 1716 pin box as that pin box is 1/2 inch wider. What camper do you have? At this time the spacers need to be ordered separately with # GY76FR.

The front mounting bolts are 13.45" back and the rear ones are 20.95" behind the gooseneck ball. The Gen-Y Nomad item # GY37ND has up to a 30,000 lbs towing capacity and a 6,500 lbs. • Does Gen-Y Nomad 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Hitch Adapter Work On Uneven Ground?
Linda, the Nomad’s coupler is an auto-latching 2-5/16 inch gooseneck, and it’s designed to grab the ball the moment the weight settles onto it. Slight unevenness doesn’t hurt anything - as long as the ball enters the throat of the coupler, the latch snaps shut on its own. No climbing up, no holding a jaw open, no “perfect” alignment required. This will definitely be a bit easier to latch and unlatch than a 5th wheel hitch; you also don't need to reach over the bed rail or climb into the...

Hi David, that’s a really good question and I’m glad you’re looking at the bigger picture here, because this is exactly where people start thinking about long term stress and not just whether something will fit. Before I get into that, The Gen-Y Nomad part # GY37ND is designed for the Lippert Rhino bolt pattern and will not fit your Lippert 1621. • Will Gen-Y Nomad 5th Wheel To Gooseneck Adapter Work On 2022 Keystone Cougar 29RKS?
Hey Jason, great question - the Keystone Cougar line almost always uses a Lippert 1621 pin box, which puts you in the territory for the Gen-Y Nomad # GY57ND. That model is built to bolt directly to the 1621/1116/1716 bolt patterns without any adapters or drilling. Just double-check your pin box tag to confirm the number, since Keystone did mix in a few 1116 boxes and some others on some floorplans over the years. The recessed housing must be at least a 12" x 12" box. Also, the distance from the top of the ball to the bed must be 1" or less. Grand Design has been pretty consistent with the 1621 over the years, but I always recommend checking your pin box tag just to be 100% sure before ordering. It’s a bolt-for-bolt replacement, so Gen-Y didn’t change the height geometry - they just swapped the kingpin for the gooseneck coupler. You’ll still want the trailer riding level, so once it’s on, check your stance and adjust if needed.
